K-QUINONE:Scientific Botanicals' K-QUINONE (Vitamin K).With Carboxylase,K-QUINONE used in the Vitamin K cycle.
K-Quinone:Scientific Botanicals'

brand of vitamin K-1(phytonadione);

the natural plant vitamin K that is free

of the toxicity associated with syn-

thetic menadione.

An ever-increasing list of drugs and

supplements is being shown to lower

vitamin K dependent protein levels.

            analgesics

            antibiotics

            anticoagulants

            anticonvulsants

            Vitamin E  etc. etc.

This figure illustrates the importance

of vitamin K-1 in post-translational

modification of certain glutamic acid

residues into gamma-carboxy g.acid.

The presence of gamm-carboxy res-

idues allows that protein to specific-

ally bind calcium ions more avidly.

    CLOTTING FACTORS

       II (Prothrombin)

          VII, IX and X

        Vitamin K enables these

        proteins to bind to calcium

        ions and platelet derived

        phospholipids in the clot-

        ting process.

    PROTEINS S and C

        Like the classic clotting

        factors, these VKDP are

        formed in the liver and

        then circulate to promote

        fibrinolysis and anti-

        coagulation!

BONE  GLA-PROTEINS

OSTEOCALCIN is the most abundant Gla-protein in humans and is the most important VKDP in bone mineralization and remodeling processes.

                   K-QUINONE

  KIDNEY GLA-PROTEINS

Kidney cells produce at least    three proteins that slow the rate     of calcium oxalate stone formation. NEPHROCALCIN (NC) is a VKDP (M.W. 14,000) and is the most potent kidney protein for inhibiting the aggregation and growth of calcium oxalate crystals. In the urine of stone-forming patients, the NC is abnormally undercarboxylated.

   VASCULAR GLA-PROTEINS

Matrx Gla-protein (MGP) is the dominate VKDP involved with vascular calcium metabolism and is a powerful inhibitor of arterial calcification. Warfarin therapy has been shown to induce vascular calcification. The serum level of undercarboxylated MGP is a promising indicator for detecting cardiovascular calcification.
